Seisan Kata – What does it mean? The word Seisan can be translated as 13 movements or 13 breaths. This is the literal translation – a more “Conceptual” translation is “Absolute power.” It is one of the oldest kata in Okinawan karate and can be traced back many generations. Tatsuo Shimabuku learned this kata from his prime teacher, Chotuku Kyan and incorporated it into his hybrid style of Isshin-Ryu. The lineage can be traced like such – Shimabuku – Kyan – Bushi Matsumora – Tode Sakugawa - Peichin Takahara.

OK - so this is your weekly lesson - TRAIN!

Stop your whining and train! Ha, just kidding. I really want to take advantage of the modern media to coomunicate weekly lessons to you guys, and have a central way of communicating lessons to people. This is all very "Beta" so feel free to criticize it! I need to know what is bad!

But seriously - as a black belt, I want you to use this central lesson point as a history tool, this week and next week - start learning the history of the style.

Founder - Tatsuo Shimabuku/ His prime teacher  - Chotuku Kyan; a master or Shorin Ryu. Just learn those two for now, and we are off to a good start.

Monday - Footwork
We are working on footwork today. Sensei Joel is going to practice this by doing an extra hour of angles on the bag today.

Average Joe – get used to moving your feet! Fitness is mobile. If you can jump rope, then grab one, or just use a kitchen extension cord and try to do 100 times! If jump rope does not work for your knees or age (Grin) then just try to do a VERY high step march in place 100 times! It is harder than you may think!

Intermediate – Practice at least 10 angle entries on each side, focusing primarily on executing proper technique with each side.

Black Belts/ Advanced – Practice shadowboxing for 20 minutes or more focusing primarily on advanced angles.


If you are a black belt, then practice your advancing angles extensively – at least 100 of each.

Tuesday – Bag Work

Average Joe – If you have a heavy bag at home, then we are going to attempt to do six 90 second rounds on it. An oven timer is great for this. If not, then we are going to do rounds of punches with neoprene weights. 1-lb dumbbells will do. While cooking dinner today, stand in the kitchen and picture your boss in front of you, while you use the weights to “Moderately” punch the air in groups of 5-10 punches. Do this 6 times for 90 seconds! Make sure to NEVER extend your elbow all the way!

Intermediate – Build up the endurance with a bag. This week is 3 minute rounds on the heavy bag – SIX of them! Can you do it??? Try to do a more advanced version of the average Joe workout on your bag!

Advanced/ Black belt – This week we are going to focus on long rounds for endurance over technique. We are going to do six 5-minute rounds on either wavemasters of heavey bags. Each round is about variety this week, so focus more on making it through, than movement. We will return to that next week.

Wednesday – Explosions

Average Joe – You cannot explode in like Bruce Lee yet, but you can practice fast movements. Try this in the kitchen while cooking today. Stand sideways while rocking back and forth. Then practice leaping in on shoulder width each way rather than a simple rock. Try this 50 times on each side.

Intermediate – We are going to practice explosive entries. Practice tiger crouching in 100 times on each side!

Advanced/ Black belt
This week we are heading out to the beach! Sensei Joel and co. are suing weight harnesses to tie some tires around themselves and practice exploding leaps through the sand – this is hard stuff. They are going to do 400 on each side! OUCH!


Thursday – Strength

Average Joe – focus on push ups! Try to do 10 sets of 10. Even if your knees are on the ground – congratulations – you just did 100 push ups!

Intermediate – Get your lazy butt to the gym today.

Advanced/ Black belt – It is traditional day. You have focused on fighting all week, now focus on your traditional forms. Pick one kata and do it slow motion at least 3 times – and visualize – visualize - visualize! You get the gym also!

Weekend –
Everyone go for a one hour bike ride in the park or beach!

Today is Bishop Donnie William's birthday.

He is part of the Joel Jimenez fan club, and also one of the toughest guys to ever fight out of Los Angeles. Soooooooo, Joel has to come up with a way to honor the Bishop with his workout today. The Bishop is also the instructor of Robert Temple, one of Joel's mentors.

Should be interesting what he comes up with. What can others come up with as well.

For conditioning - it is for time. 50 swing stretcehs with each leg, each side.

Now, it is the last week of glove training (Hopefully) for Sensei Joel. So today, there is one little catch, he has to fill the inside of the glove with soft soap and wear it like that for his training.

Then:100 Flow Drills - by the number (1-10) - these are wtih a partner today. If it is an od number of people, then rotate.

Your partner calls out a number and you come in with that entry. -"Instantly" Then your partner just goes through what they are capable of.** NOW: Joel cannot hit his opponent - BUT - his opponent should hit him in either the chest or jaw if he come in with his guard down.

Well, as he follow the course of Joel's traning, he did it on Thursday. He trained VERY weak all week, expecting the world to come to him as usual - but on Thursday he came on strong. it was "KnockOut" Thursday and his training partners had a choice - either knock him out or do 100 push ups. The catch was he could not hit them - only evade 10 entris!

He did it, and his claw attacks were strong.

So today is Dropping Saturday. He has to do either 100 low drills or at least enough until he drops.

You do you translate this to home, easy. Do as many as a particular combo as you can, where is your point , that you just say - "Enough of This!"

Well, I gotta give it to the boy. He actually did it. He did the one hour push up - took an hour to do one push-up without his body ever touching the ground - that was impressive.

Now on to the real stuff.

Today is a running day again. So Joel is going to run with a series of combinations, up and down the mat. Yes, it is for a full hour without stopping. This may sound confusing to you, so all you have to do, to mirror the champ is practice 5 combinations 10 times each today. If you have, to make them up foor the first time!

Also of course, practice your daily routine!

So far this week, Joel has not reported in for any of his training. He was told to take yesterday off. Now, this afternoon, we are going to the dojo to break him in. Soooooooo - for the third time this week, we are going to try the one hour push up...

HA, it is raining outside in CA today, which is funny, becasue today is the first REAL day of Sensei Joel's training. I had planned on having him run today...

So, he is going to run and run and run.

So practice your daily routine today and find a way to run like Joel. Whether that is an elipitcal at the gym, jumproping before class, - whatever - BUT RUN FORREST RUN!

Today is filming day. Every great plan begins with a picture - so to know where we are going, we have to know where we are.

1) Find a place to video your kata(s). If you do not have a place, then talk to one of the Sensei about doing it in class, and uploading it to your page for you.

2) Watch it and critique yourself. That does not mean "Criticize." It means to look for both the good and the bad. Compare yourself to the footage of Master Uezu on the kata links - see where you are.

If you do not have the ability to tape today, then simply find a way to practice them, for when you can tape!

Today is a BIG weekend coming up, so rest today - watch a movie or something and enjoy the hecticness of a busy day before a holiday weekend.

This weekend is going to be a marathon for some of the Black belts who are in deeper training, so we are going to post it, and try your best to keep up with them.

But at the very least - make a goal for thsi wekend, that you would like to hit, physically - and MAKE IT HUGE! Then, tom we will set the Black belt goals, and we can go against each other.

I Wanna Rock!

I just saw an old Twisted Sister video on VH1 - "I Wanna Rock." What most kids don't realize is that these amazing rockers may rock all night and sleep all day - BUT they practice their pentatonic scales all evening and are always on a quest to learn - that is how they all became great. Many have talent - few ever harness it.

SO ROCK TODAY -
1) Your Daily Set (See prior grinds)
2) Practice all your kata 2X full focus
3) Pick one kata and do it very very very slow, very slow and try to see your opponent moving in slow motion as well - see how they move and train your mind!
4) LOVE what you do!

Practice, practice, practice! Then train some more!

This morning I got up and did a set of kata, before watching the sunrise on the bike path. Not much, just enough to start the year off right. So - who can do that tomorow? Day number two of the year, be up before the rest of the world training?
